Sarama Banerjee was a lower-middle-class Bengali girl who lived with her elder brother and his wife. Avinash, a classmate, loved her and left his studies to work as a commercial artist. Bipin, the elder brother of Mantu, married Sarama and later committed suicide. Sarama became so alone that she kept herself busy in medical practise.
