Ajay Singh (Sunil Dutt) meets Asha Chibber (Asha Parekh), a simple girl, from a humble background. Both fall in love and Ajay's mother Gayetridevi (Lalita Pawar) approves of Asha. After the wedding, Asha is expected to conceive but is unable to do so. To add to Asha's suffering, a traumatic incident results in Asha losing her eyesight and become completely dependent on Ajay. Her frustrated mother-in-law forces Asha to leave the house and arranges a second marriage for Ajay, an act which will change the lives of everyone in the house forever. Will Ajay stand up to his mother for Asha, or abandoning Asha, will he remarry?
